Finding Files

Hey guys, easy question. I just haven't been able to figure it out yet.

what is an effective way to find files in OSX? Example, if I wanted to find *.JPG on my hard disk. Or if I wanted to find *.JPG but only after a certian date.. or other filters.

I thought Sherlock did it, but that searches the internet and stuff right? Does anyone here like Sherlock? I have never seriously used it.
 
Search in the little window in the regular Finder window (fastest).

Or use the Find... item in the File menu of the Finder (more options).
