Firewire doesn't see my ipod

Previously i have had no problems with ipod use, itunes kicked in right to sync etc. But now profiler doesn't even detect my ipod when plugged into the firewire ports, and when i usb conect it, all it sees, is it on desktop as a disk, no sign of it in itunes at all!!!! Any advice, i've done all i know to do...

P.S. its a new ipod, and a G4 powermac.

Does iPod Software Updater (Check in your /Applications/Utilities folder) recognise it?

It might want to be updated or reset (you'll have to sync your music again).

Does the iPod receive power from the FireWire? As in, does it say it's charging?

No, when i try n use updater it says plug in an ipod to update, even tho it is, so i tried disconnecting and trying again when it asks, no luck.

The power does appear to be coming from the firewire to the ipod as it does have the charging icon up on the ipod screen once plugged in. just doesn't do anythin else!!! So frustrating!
