Firewire DVD-R Drives for OSX?

I own a 500 MHz iceBook running 10.1.4. Recently I've wanted to look into making my own DVDs, but haven't wanted to plunk down the $2000 for a new DVD-R system. However, I wanted to ask the following: I know that Pioneer makes a FireWire DVD-R drive. Would it work under OSX, and if so, would it even be useful to try and use under OSX to burn DVDs with? Would the 500MHz/256MB RAM iBook not be fast enough (I realize I'd need to more than likely do nothing but the burning of the software)?

And if there is another firewire DVD-R solution, that would be fine as well -- I just wanna be able to only put down $400 to burn DVDs, not $2000.
