firewire failure

I plugged in a firewire/usb 2.0 hd up to my emac and the cords were accidentally yanked out of the computer. I was given an error message that any data may have been lost since it was not safely removed. However, the problem is whenever I plug the firewire device back in doesn't register at all. Please help!

Unplugged all Firewire & USB devices (besides the keyboard & mouse) and do a Reset Your PRAM. This should help and in the future make sure you unmount an external firewire/USB external (by dragging to the Trash Can and it will change to an eject symbol?) and de-mounting it first.

Thanks! I tried that. Unfortunately the hard drive that was plugged in through the firewire was running while the cord was pulled out. Which may have damaged the hard drive. I had to take it to a Mac tech store to find out.
