Firewire Issues

I am currently using a PowerbookG4 running 10.2 and I attempted to plug the firewire plug in like usual, but this time it didn't respond. When going to the system profile is said that "no firewire devices were connected", and I double checked to make sure that everything was securely plugged in. I also tried other devices and that did not work either. I consider my self more that reasonaby knowledgable about the Mac OS and I've never seen anything like this. I was just wondering if this ever happened to anyone else? How could a port stop working out of no where?

i have found that most of my drive recognition problems can be traced back to the boot disk. more often than not, running diskwarrior on the boot drive will bring back the missing drive. sometimes it's the drive itself, but again, DW seems to solve this most of the time. in any event, it is most likely the directory of one or the other that is screwed up. on the other hand, sometimes just repairing permissions will fix this as well.

I just went through DiskWarrior3 and cleaned up the startup disk. I was just thinking if the directory was cleaned up and when i booted the computer off the DW3 disk it still wasn't reading the firewire HD (other firewire devices do not respond either) .Do you think it would it be a good idea just to buy a firewire pci card because the port is fried? Or do you think that wouldn't work either?

A firewire PCI card won't do you any good since you're on a laptop.

Try resetting the PRAM by holding down the command-option-p-r keys when you reboot or start up and let the computer chime three times before you release them.

Alternatively, you can boot into open-firmware and reset the NVRAM by typing "reset-nvram", press ENTER, then typing "reset-all" and pressing ENTER again.

I set the PRAM and that didn't work. I tried rebooting in open firmware and that didn't work after resetting nvram as well as reset-all. Any other ideas anyone?

What kind of FireWire device are you trying to connect? Have you tried rebooting with no devices attached, logging in, and then connecting the device in question?

I have the exact same problem, but I tried using a century pcmcia card, which only made things worse: Although it seems to work fine on my own computer, as soon as I plug my HD into another FW-slot, both the drive and the slot crashes! I have no idea how this happens, but I'm really anxious to move further, as I've already crashed to many devices. Have you tried any other solutions ? I'm thinking the new Lacie FW800 pcmcia card might work, since it also has power on it ?

The tech guys from OWC, from whom I bought the card sent me this this link as an option:

Does anyone know where the PMU button is located on a powerbook?

PB g4 550 Mhz (combo version) running OS 10.3.2.

sorry if this is kinda obvious, but did you try other firewire cables as well as other devices? A friend of mine had similar problems, and found it worked fine with different firewire cables.
