Firewire Networking

iWork for Apple <3
i know with my laptop i can restart it holding down the T key.... but i want to be able to swap files on both computers in real time(like with ethernet), not using my laptop as an external HD. posible or not?

Hello there,

I ask this one because I seriously dont know...

Will your computer really provide a faster transfert on FireWire?
If we compare with an Ethernet connection using the IP to connect.

new firewire drives give you a transfer of around 36MB/sec
while transfers over TCP/IP 100mbp network give you around 10 MB/sec

so hook both of them up to a hub and enable fileshare, that's fast enough.
Only way you can have access to both comps.

I think there's no way to do 'Firewire Networking'. When Firewire was only an idea, I thought that this would be the most _normal_ thing I'd do as soon as I had two machines with Firewire... It's a pity Apple doesn't provide such a functionality, as it really should be no problem at all.

Remember SCSI....

I was so dissapointed when I been told that I couldnt connect 2 mac
back to back using SCSI, and I had to use this cheap little round connector
to do it instead... why cant I use the big fat connector instead..??

No one told me...

I still wake up at night in swet asking why i had to wait after the Apple Talk
connection...

Lets not bitch too much about it... We have a lot now

Hehehe....

FireWire networking is certainly a possibility.

Unibrain makes a software product called "FireNet" that enables FireWire networking on both Macs and PCs. They have a free trial that works for 30 minutes between reboots.

But gigabit ethernet to gigabit ethernet from a PowerMac to TiBook would be almost 2.5x faster -- and it would just require a standard CAT5 patch cable (1000Mbits/sec compared to 400Mbits/sec -- theoretical peak throughput).
