Firewire problems in Tiger and Leopard

Hi,
I have a 20GB VST Firewire drive that used to work great on my old iMac
running Tiger, but at one point it stopped showing up on the desktop when connected. I took it to work and was able to access it on the G5 there with Leopard installed, but today, when I tried again, it would not mount on the desktop, and when I disconnected it and connected the backup drive we normally use on that computer, that one disappeared too! If that wasn't enough, the Sony CD burner which also is connected by Firewire was nowhere to be found. Is there any remedy for the "Firewire Blues"?
Thanks for your time
Truls

You are conflating issues. FireWire is hardware, not software. If you are having problems with FireWire, then you need to look first at hardware. The first thing that you check is your FireWire cable. Does it make a reliable connection. If you have only one FireWire device, then use a different cable to connect it to your computer. Because you have having the problem on multiple computers with multiple devices, it is important you eliminate the cable before you investigate other possibilities.
