Firmware update killed my G4

I just went through the firmware update (v.4.4.8) which the weekly software update found and after restarting (holding down the power button until I got the long tone, as instructed) my machine went dead! I didn't even have a signal to the monitor until I zapped the PRAM and now it gives me the little "timeclock" circle endlessly. I tried re-installing the system but the installer freezes up at the "preparing the disk" screen. What the heck did I do?
 
I hope you have the newest G4, the one with the mirrored drive bays. if not you shouldn't have done the update.

I did the update on my Dual 867 with no problems. After the tone, a progress bar came up, then booted into OSX. Still runs fine...
 
I, on the other hand, installed the firmware update on my dual 867, and now my combo drive won't read discs. Zapping the PRAM fixed nothing. Yikes!
