fix the noisy DP mirrored powermacs once and for all.

Yeah, kudos to Apple for doing that. I went into an Apple retailer store and noticed that even though it was louder than my G4, it was still much quieter than my Athlon!

bump for people who've got mirrored drives. i just ordered my new power supply. i'll let everyone know how it is ^_^.

"Orders will begin shipping in limited quantities on: March 10, 2003"

Naa... just do what one fine individual did on this board...put extension cables on everything, knock a part of your wall out and stick the G4 in the hole!

He was actually kind of surprised that I was surprised at his solution. :p

it really sucks that they didn't do this earlier, the only thing i actually hate about my quiksilver is the fact that is too loud.

even after march 10th it'll take 8-10 weeks for delivery x_x. i hope this is still my address at that juncture.

If MDLarson was talking about me, yes indeed, I busted a hole in my wall and put the G4 in the opposite room.

It's a bit drastic for most people, but depending on your house or office layout is really easy and not as silly as it might sound.

You want a quiet computer, by gosh you'll get one. Dead quiet. It's such a joy. I do music stuff, so it's really irritating to me to hear the slightest external noise. Even that aside, the original mirrored window G4s were INSANELY loud! And then one day when the overdrive fan kicked in I could not believe what I was hearing. I honestly thought our washer-dryer had broken or something. It was like a jet engine.

I've also got an old Power Tower Pro, which was rather noisy as well. I removed all the fans including the one on the power supply. I figure if it dies, who cares, I just have it for a couple of old projects that won't work in Classic or on newer machines. Very quiet machine except for the old SCSI drives (anyone remember SCSI?).

I even replaced the hard drive in my iMac 450 becasue it was too loud. And that's an iMac! Those things are quiet. The Seagates sem to be the quietest drives I can find. Crazy quiet.

In short, I hate computer noise. You should too. I will be sorely disappointed if the next towers aren't as quiet as they should be.

I remember SCSI! (This computer uses it; it's beige, for cryin'...)

I think my parents might not appreciate me punching holes in their walls.

I don't do music, but had this crazy loud WinDoze server... So I built a quiet box for it to muffle the sound, but it did not work well enough.

I have a musician friend who found a way to haver her G4 mirrored drive doors 20 feet away in another room... It was the same idea as the hole in the wall, except with long cables and no hole. (The problem is it is real easy to trip over the wires walking into the studio.)

Check out the Apple site for a firmware update to quiet the fans. It really works! Prior to that I installed a small fan blowing directly across the cooling fins on the dual processors and added a "turbo Fan" in one of my top PCI slots that exhausts the air out the back. The combination of these two fans would often let the machine run for a long time without the "roar". However, once the roar started it generally would cycle then. Rebooting usually put it back in a quiet mode again. I now have the firmware update and the fans and it seems to have solved the problem. This stuff was ordered from cyberguys (a neat place for compute stuff) and was installed with no modifications to the case etc. I don't know if it matters but I almost never run OS X. Still waiting for Quark 6 before I plunge.
