folders in the dock

I'd swear I could do this in the Public Beta, and I don't remember trying it in 10.0.x, but I'm on 10.1 and I want to place a folder that contains aliases on the dock so I can do the click-and-hold to get a sorta-emulated "apple menu" effect of having a pop-up applications list.

However, no matter what folder I try, when i drag it to the dock, none of the icons move over, and when I release the dragged folder, it flies back to it's place in the finder.

Is it possible to place a folder in the dock anymore?

Yes, just add your folder to the RIGHT of the divider line (next to Trash Can). Only Applications can be on the LEFT of the line. Documents, Folders, etc. go on the RIGHT.
