Yep! A few:
1. Ditch FontBook. Deactivate any fonts it's managing
2. Get the free FontExplorer: http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorer
3. Make sure all your user fonts are not in any system folders (Use Tools/Clean System Fonts Folders to remove all but the required system fonts)
4. Create a MY FONTS (or name it what you remember best) and put all your fonts there.
5. Add to Library in FE and away you go!
It never hurts to repair permissions regularly; helps keep issues at bay as well. Go to apps/utilities/disk utility/repair permissions and run "repair permissions" before you start in with the fonts/app download I just described.

I have deactivated all fonts in Font Book but have not deleted it from my computer. I currently use Suitcase Fusion to manage fonts but I seem to require a better understanding of the program.
Using the program, Onyx, I cleaned up the font cache which seemed to help.
