Font smoothing on iMac 17"

I've tried all 4 font smoothing proposed in the General panel... and the best one for my flat panel 17" iMac is....

Standard - Best for CRT

Light is too thin (mostly for the "i"s in the menu)
Medium (supposed to be best for flat panels) and Strong are too fat.

Funny...changing between all four of them doesn't do anything to my fonts. They are all the same. What am I doing wrong?
