force ipod update?

is there a way i can force my ipod to update straight away, short of unplugging it from my puter then plugging it back in?

is it that hard to pull it out and reconnecting it? if anything I'd like to know how to not update...I'd like to stay et 1.1 without iTunes constantly telling me there's something newer out there...
