Formatting my mac and installing Mac OS X

How do I format my computer? should I use disk utility or any other programs.

If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.
 
After you've made a backup of everything important, just boot from your Mac OS X installation disk and just go ahead and install, choosing to erase the drive while at it. That way, you can do it in one take. There's no need for another application for formatting the drive.
 
ok thanks, It has taken me 6 hours just to backup all my stuff, 500 gigs worth of stuff that is.
Finally I can format it, thanks alot.
