Free Data Recovery Software ?

Data Rescue X is a good piece of software:

But it's $89.00. I don't know of any applications like this one that are completely free, though.
My advice is that if the files are important to you, stop using your computer immediately. The more you use it, the better the chance that the files you wanna recover are going to be overwritten with new data, and therefore completely unrecoverable.

The only data recovery software I am aware of isTechTool Pro 4.0.3 at an msrp of $97.97 USD or Data Rescue X at an msrp of $87.00 USD. Both of these have the ability to recover data after the fact.
If you want to put protection in place, before the fact, TechTool Pro again has that capability and the publisher of Data Rescue has Data Recycler at an msrp of $49.00 USD.
Norton Utilities for Macintosh has a data recovery feature similar to TechTool Pro, but given its track record and the fact Symantec has dropped further development of the product I cannot recommend it under any circumstances. But then it does not meet your criteria of "free" any more than the other products do.
