Frozen Menubar items and Clock

I've got a problem with my menubar clock freezing. Right now its stuck on Monday 12:02AM. When I move the mouse over it i get the spinning beachball. I get the same reaction when I mouse over the sound, ichat, monior, and bluetooth menubar items. However the konfabulator menubar item still works. I feel its obviously some system problem.

Has anyone had a similar experience or having any suggestions? I talked with Apple and they want me to try a new user. *Pain in the Arse, Worthless*

Thanks for the input!

Try Command-dragging the frozen items out of the menu bar, then go into System > Library > Core Services > Menu Extras and double click the menu extras you want to appear (probably all the ones you dragged out).

Arden,

I can't even click on them. As soon as I put the mouse over them the wheel starts spinning. Plus I can't even drag out the menu bar clock.

Another note on the clock. When I go to system prefs its not checked. So I check it and close it. Come back and its unchecked again.

What's not checked?

Try removing the affected menu bar items from the above folder and storing them somewhere safe, and see what happens.

So, does the problem go away when using a new user? (great troubleshooting tip for this type of problem, BTW) If you're not sure how to go about doing that, you can move the preferences folder out of your user/Library (perhaps to the Desktop), then logout and log back in as the same user. Check that your problem is now gone, (it should be gone) The preferences folder will be re-created fresh at this point, and you can choose to find needed pref files that you require back in the new preferences folder (should be only a few, or even none at all, so you can just trash that folder you moved, after seeing that your problem is gone.)
One of the utilities that allows deleting your cache files (such as Maintain1, or OnyX) might be needed, to get your system 'tuned up', and working more smoothly. :)

Arden,

I will try moving the items out of the folder later this evening. And see if that helps.

Delta,

I haven't tried a new user because the problem takes 24-48 hours to occur after a reboot or login. I may give the preferences folder a go and take it out and test it for 24 hours.

Thanks for the tips. This is such a pain, especially when I want to check the date. I'm constantly forgetting :)

This started pretty soon after I got my iSight. I wonder if it has anything to do with it?

Haven't tried permissions repair, but I did remove my prefs and I'm adding a few back at a time. So far i've only added back Mail prefs and quicken prefs.

I have had this happen at times, but a logout has always fixed it. It normally happens to me after the machine has been sleeping for a real long time - longer then just over night.
Still don't have any idea why it happens, but I've never really tried to fix it.
