Fuel to Tablet rumour fire

I won't weigh in on the rumor, but Gosh Darn it, I want one NOW! I had a chance to play with a Toshiba tablet PC and it was so much fun - even on Windows. Apple should have lead the charge on this one, but maybe the Newton is still too close for comfort (though I had one of those and loved it far more than any Palm I have owned since).

If Apple was going to do that, they might as well go and make a pda that can actually do some work. Apple should eventually migrate current iBook owners to the PowerBook or desktop Macs, then come out with an iBook model that looks more a book to rival (and surpass) the Tablet PC. Don't get me wrong, I think the iBooks are great. Have two of them in fact, the graphite clamshell and a snow. But look at the original iMacs, those were hugely successful, but now they're gone.
Not to quote myself, well, yes, actually to quote myself. I posted that in a different thread just last week and was mocked, mocked. Damnit, it won't stand. If I was any more bitter, I would say TOLD YOU SO! ::ha:: :D ::angel::

If the iTablet had handwriting and voice recognition, it could do some damage in the market.

Personally I beleive the way forward is less about cramming more technology in one device and more about having specialist devices that can collaborate to create a network based device.

This is what Sony is apparently doing with the Playstaion 3 and what mobile manufacturers are begining to do with phones.

A fairly dumb terminal (tablet) for the home which netwroked wrielessly with other electonic devices (computer, tv, stereo) would be truly groundbreaking stuff.

:D

I think Apple made a mistake by not debuting the tablet mac as MWSF, if it was ready. I think the 17" and 12" powerbooks are kinda becoming duds now, with the fact that the 12" is reported to be a hot-cake with under performance, with the 17" being shipped 2 months after being announced (too long in the tech industry, IMHO), and Intel's launch of Centrino, which provides powerbook performance, with ibook battery life for some Centrino-based PC's (like the thinkpad).

If Apple waits until Q1'04 to launch a tablet, by that time there will be Centrino based Tablet PC's that will outperform, and will probably have apps like One Note that greatly capitalize on the note-taking ability of the Tablet PC, which the iTablet may not have.

My opinion: Apple should launch by summer, 2003 a Tablet Mac, with note-taking ability, and One Note capability, with a battery life of at least 6 hours (use ibook platform), with bluetooth, and wireless. This should come in either a notebook convertible form-factor (my preference), or a single tablet that can be plugged into a docking station to use it as a desktop.

centrino = powerbook performance + ibook battery life...

last time i checked, the comparison between pentium and powerpc processors wasn't THAT easy.

Yes, though I love my G4 DP 1 GHZ, I am so sick of going to my office, waking it up, to check email, movies or some web site. If my G4 could act as a server to some tablet device, it would be fantastic.

I'd love a tablet Mac, but there are pdas such as the T/T where you can do exactly what you said. I use bluetooth with my Macs and my Palm Tungtsen T. I can check mail, surf, even watch quicktime movies on it.
If an ITab were to come, it would have to find a niche just above the high-end pdas, but below the laptop.
