Funny mailer-daemon messages -

I read the forum descriptions and really couldn't figure out where to put this. Cafe is probably not the place, but it is something to talk over with a cuppa, so...

I got the following message from my mailer-daemon here in Cairo. It seems this is a new virus/worm that is running about. The funny thing is, its not mine. I NEVER use a PC to check my mail at this account, and didn't even know there was such a thing as the Housing New Zealand Corporation. But they apparently got mail from me and I got this back from them.

How is this happening? Has the worm invaded my isp or does it use the inbox of other computers to scrounge around for addresses to put in the from and return to places?

I use Eudora 6 and 10.3.2

That's odd, indeed... it was probably something to do with someone else on the BCC list, or the spammer somehow managed to do it. I bet you aren't the only person to get that email.

Your email address was in someones address book on an infected machine. That machine is now spewing spam out and uses the address as the sender by putting your name and others in the Reply To field at random. This is why you got the response.

Just ignore them and throw them out. You did not do it and your amchine is most likely not involved at all.

The virus is MyDoom.

Its designed to run though windows email clients and kazaa users and it will propogate itself very agressively. On Feb 1, all the infected machines will begin a Denial-of-Service type of attack targeting SCO's servers. (SCO is suing people for anything with "nix" at the end, but this is just an excuse for some malicious loser to assert his power by annoying people)

I had to abandon my e-mail address because of this virus, 3 days ago I started getting bizarre test, mail-server, hi...messages from every conceivable e-mail address. It started off with 94 spam messages, it's now up to 300 a day (I checked it today in college). Unbelievable. This had been my official e-mail address that I don't give out or use to fill in any online forms. I got little or no junk mail to this address because I was so careful with it.. now it's worthless. One question, I presume that it won't be able to use my Mac to start this denial of service attack?

My Doom, that's it, i couldn't remember the name when I was posting.

This is actually the third strange post I have had from mailer-daemons of folks I don't know. Is it that these isp's actually do have good scanning systems, or is it the spoof to make people open the attachment (there's always an attachment) The messages are all well phrased and all ask one to open the attachment.

That is to say that other than those, I haven't seen any increase in other posts that might be the worm.
