G3 266 memory upgrade

the time has come to make that old G3 266 as fast as my pismo, so i took the plunge & bought
a g4 500 zif and 256mb of memory.

ZIF? no problemo.

MEM? well pulling all the ram and putting the
new 256 stick in, system profiler says i only
have 128mb installed.

WHA???

1 256 & 2 128s = 512 but not here...

any CLUE what is going on? If tme MEM was
bad, id expect it not to work at all.....

How much does it say you have in total? 384 MB?
I thought 168 pin DIMMs had to be installed in pairs, but that's obviously not the problem. The cause is probably that the chip has too high density, causing the chip to be read as the half. The system simply isn't designed to handle that kind of chips becuase they didn't exist at the time the computers were built.

Did you make sure you pushed the Ram chip in so it makes contact and is sitting properly?
Did you get the PC66 3.3v 168 pin SDRAM 10ns?

If you have the Desktop you need the lowprofile chip, the mini tower takes the regular size.

You have three slots. You could have kept the other two 128's in.

The other thought is that the RAM chip is bad and only one side is working.

They're probably not seated properly - take 'em all out and put them back in, making sure both sides snap into place.

I have 768 MB in my Beige G3/300 Desktop (overclocked to 333) and all is fine.
