G3 B&W freezes on Tiger boot from DVD or disk

Hello all!

I'm trying to upgrade my G3 B&W from OS 9.2.2 to Tiger. No go.

Here's the configuration:
G3 B&W rev 2, 450MHz, 512MB , Adaptec 2940U2B w/2 scsi drives.

It boots and runs OS 9.2.2 with no problems.

I'm trying to upgrade the other SCSI drive (36GB) to Tiger.

I load the DVD and reboot while holding the 'c' key down.

I get the Grey apple logo, then the spinning cog wheel. Then it freezes with the cog wheel still showing, but no longer spinning.

Rarely, I get as far as the blue screen.

Very rarely, I get as far as the "select language".

Very, very rarely I actually get as far as starting the installation.

It never has actually completed an instalation.

I moved both the DVD drive and the 36GB HD to another G3, which is already running Tiger, and did the Tiger install on that other machine. I then moved the Tiger HD back to the troublesome G3 and booted from the Tiger HD.

Same problem as above. Spinning cog wheel for awhile then the cog wheel freezes.

The memory that came with this G3 was 10ns PC100, which is not quite right, so I replaced it with 2 new 256 MB PC-133 7.5ns 3-3-3 memory sticks from Crucial Memory, guaranteed to work with a G3 B&W. It does indeed work just fine with OS 9.2.2.

To determine if perhaps there was a problem with the SCSI controller, I unplugged it and tried to boot from the DVD, just as a test. Same problem.

I moved the memory from the working OS 10.4 G3 B&W to this one. Same problem.

The firmware seems correct.

I was thinking of swapping display cards with the working machine, but otherwise I'm out of ideas.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

what you will need to somehow is to hold down apple key + V key before the grey apple screen comes up. then when stops booting take note of all that on the screen and post it here. Then we can see what OS X is doing and at what "Hardwear or System point" that it is hanging.

DOes your G3 B&W actually have a DVD-ROM drive? If not, then there lies the problem.

When booted to Mac OS 9, go to the Apple menu and select Apple System Profiler. In there it will tell you everything about your G3 B&W, especially what optical drive you're using.

You know I run OS X 10.4 on my Wallstreet that only has a CD Rom. There are CD vers of 10.4. So no. It would not boot if he tryed to use a DVD in a CD Rom drive like you are saying. So he most be useing a drive that is right for what ever type of the OS he has.

Upon looking once again, the original poster DID mention that he moved the DVD drive to another G3 so it's not what I thought. :p

Thanks everyone for the help.

To answer some questions:
My original post did mention that the firmware is current. It's 1.1.1f4.
My original post did mention that I have a DVD drive, which I moved to a working G3 and used to build an OS 10.4 HD, which HD and DVD I then moved back to the problem G3, where trouble persisted.

I have tried booting with command-V, and it passes all of the text stuff and gets to blue screen status bar, and then freezes.

Sometimes, it gets past the status bar, and displays a desktop and mounts the volumes and freezes.

Sometimes it boots up fully and runs for a few minutes before it freezes.

I downloaded a copy of the latest memtest and ran it in single user mode for 30 passes of all tests. It found no errors.

My other G3 runs OS 10.4 with SCSI drives and has no problems.

I'm open to more suggestions!

Sound as if you you might have a dieing part on your hands. I would so if you have moved the drive over to a older G3 and you can get your OS up and running, them some part is trying to to die on you. as for if 10.4.x will use SCSI yes it will. I use a old 3rd party Zip drive for my PDQ Wallstreet. and it uses SCSI. Now the thing is will 10.5 have that in it or not that we will all have to see.

After much swapping out of parts with other machines, I have concluded the 450 MHz CPU is bad.

Even when I clock the original 450 Mhz CPU at 400 MHz, it continually freezes at random places in OS X.

Using another CPU, rated at 400 MHz and clocked at 400 MHz, no problems even after several days of hard use.

Putting the 450 MHz CPU in another machine, clocked at either 450 MHz or 400 MHz, it freezes.

The e-bay person I bought this machine from billed it as a 450 MHz machine, but shipped a rev 1, 400 MHz machine. He subsequently sent me another motherboard (rev 2) with a 450 MHz cpu. I was suspicious at the start of this cpu, now I know it's bad.

Hopefully, he'll make good on this.

Thanks everyone, for your help.
