G3 Battery/Boot Problem

I just removed the battery from my Powerbook G3 Firewire b/c I was having problems getting an external hard drive to mount...the manufacturer recommended taking out the battery for a while, unplugging it, then starting over. But when I put the battery back in, it turns on, but boots only far enough to show a prohibitory sign (circle with a slash through it).

The LED lights illuminate on the battery, and I've tried starting up with just the battery and just the adapter. Also tried resetting the PRAM (command-option-P-R at startup), using the reset button, and the other recommendations short of reinstalls, but nothing seems to be working...

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Hi Eric --

Thanks for the help...I've run through the tips on the site, but can't get any good results. I haven't yet run a boot off of the CD (it's currently a few thousand miles away...but that's starting to seem like the only solution.)

thanks,

Pat

Hi --

Thanks for the reply. I don't have the OS disk that came with my system (the latest one I put on my computer was 10.3.4.) That disk is a few thousand miles away, but hopefully on its way. In the meantime, I tried using a friend's Tiger disk (literally straight out of the box), which changed things, but still didn't work. The computer recognized the disk in the startup manager (I pressed option while starting). After I selected it and clicked on the arrow button to start with the CD, it hummed for a bit, then came up with a screen showing a big power button in the background, and (in about five languages) a message telling me I needed to restart by pressing the power button for several seconds. Overlaid on top of this image was the basic black text boxes with writing that said:

Panic(cpu 0 caller 0x002E49D0_: Unable to find driver for this platform: “PowerBook3,1”

Latest stack backtrace for cpu 0:

Panic: We are hanging here….

While the last line may be the most apt, I'm wondering if there's any hope of a different result if I use the actual 10.3 disk...any ideas?
During the regular startup (without the CD), the harddrive starts humming, but makes none of the clicks that would suggest it's doing anything.

The computer is a Powerbook G3 Firewire
The external hard drive is a Lacie d2 160 gig...it is still working partially...I was able to get most of my files off of it, but two of the volumes still won't mount (a less important problem right now).

thanks again for the help,

Plane
