G3 imac won't boot with new drive?

Help. I recently installed new 80gb hard drive in my slot loading Mac. It will not boot from the CD. I took the drive out, had it formatted and put back in, still no results. My machine will not boot from my discs. The local Mac guy is stumped. The drive works ok in another machine, so that does not seem to be the trouble, and my original drive(10gb) works fine in my mac as well.

What would cause my mac not to boot from my discs?

If you can boot to a CD when the old hard drive is installed, then the most likely cause is the drive select jumpers on your hard drive. Make sure the jumpers are set to master, and not cable select or slave.
If you have an off-brand drive (something other than Hitachi/IBM, Maxtor, Western Digital or Seagate) then you may have a drive that just is not compatible with your iMac. I see some that just don't work.

The drive is a Maxtor, jumper setting is Master. I have not tried to mount a CD lately with the original drive, so I do not know if that is the trouble. I will have to try that next.

I have decided the problem is with my CD drive, not the hard drive. Can anyone suggest where I can get a new CD drive for my slot loading iMac DV? Thanks for the help.

David
