G3 won't startup after software update from 10.42 to 10.4.3

Hello,
I turned on my G3/400 and Software Update informed me that there was an upgrade available, but after this upgrade, all I get is an Apple Logo with a spinning clock thing under it for a while, then the screen turns blue and a cursor appears in the upper left hand corners of the screen and disappears every few seconds and is replaced by the spinning clock thing in the lower middle of the screen; then back to the cursor; then the spinning clock, and this would go on forever if I didn't shut it down. I zapped the Pram, installed 10.2 on an internal drive to run Disk Utility to repair permissions and verify disk, and it says it OK, but if I choose 10.4 as the startup disk it does the same thing and I can't get it to startup in 10.2 without a reinstall. It ignores "Shift-Alt-Command-Delete" and "Option". Is 10.4.3 just not supposed to run on a G3/400? Is this something I can fix on the command line? I can startup in 10.4.3 in Single User mode, but not in Safe Mode. I'm confused!!!
