G3's and OSX's gadgety features

Just wondering, does anyone have anything to say about the performance of OS X's more gadgety features on a Mac with a G3 processor? I understand that things like the animated dock and such are optimized for AltiVec on the G4. Do these types animations and whatnot run smoothly on, say, an iMac?

I just bought a new SE and I;m wondering what type of screen performance I can expect when I take the dive into OS X.
