flickers is too weak a word for the mini meltdowns. have spent two dreadful weeks trying to figure out what is wrong, disconnecting all, getting dedicated grounded outlets, replacing surge controls, cables, purging data, etc. i thought it was the monitor and got a new apple 23" which i can't use because even dvi adaptor cannot ...etc. the flickers seem like an electrical prob because the frightening popping sounds and partial shutdowns. at one pt when i disconnected all but screen and drive, i was okay for a day, but horror came back. monitor does not pop when plugged alone, and neither does tower. but put the two together and soon i will be able to roast marshmallows. i am desperate for all the usual reasons. tomorrow i have to go out and charge another newer hard drive i guess or return the display, but i am afraid to buy a fancy g5 drive and then the price dives due to intel or intel leaves it in the dust. meanwhile, i have to get going tomorrow or jump off the roof. does this sound like death of hard drive? before last mini death, there was no failure of performance or software type issues and disk utility found nada. what should i buy tomorrow? patty

You are not alone. See 'Screen Problem' just posted. This has now happened to my laptop G4 and imac G5. I have screen captured the effect when it is at its worst if anybody needs to see. I have ended up buying a new laptop because it happened to my G4 laptop first and I assumed it was video card. Like you I cannot be without for one day.

the local pc genius (no mac people here) is coming over to see what is wrong before i go spend more $. i will post what he says if useful. he thinks he can do something, and i hope he is right. patty

if someone else has this prob sometime: it turned out to be a dead monitor, which was probably worked to death. in its wake, probably due to monitor-caused surges, the other casualty was a new lacie dvd burner external which now has a click of death like zip disks when they go. hard drive fine. as for the new display, the pc guy added a new radion ati 9800 card which let the hd display be hooked up. i bought the card at datavision for 249 plus tax. they were out of the cheaper ones. so i did buy a new drive or powerbook and have staved off that expense, i hope, for awhile.
