G4 Powerbook, OS 10.4 won't boot up

I have a G4 Powerbook laptop. I have never had any trouble with it. It suddenly now will not start OS10. It starts up fine and the blue screen comes up and it says starting OS X.. the blue bar lights all the way up then it just gets stuck. Please help. Thanks!

have you tried booting up the laptop from a mac os dvd and running disk utility from the utilities menu off the cd, maybe doing repair permissions or repair disk ??
