heres my dilema.. i bought a used g4 gigabit ethernet with processor and have been trying to install os x, but it hangs on the grey apple screen.. ive tried using many different drives with a full version of os x already on, no os x on it, etc.. ive tried different working ram modules and that doesnt work. ive also gotten it to boot from my external dvd drive with tiger in it, but it also hangs on the same spot..

the previous owner has os 9 on it, so im assuming the firmware needs to be upgraded.. does anyone know if there is a way to do this without a previous version of so 9 already installed.. reason being i dont have os 9.

unless i can use my original os x that has os 9 on it? i still have my powerbook, but i could install the original os x on it still, but would that os 9 work, and would i be able to boot from it, or just open it up within os x.

thanx in advance
mike

i had exactly this problem ..... installing osx on to 9.2 hard disk, i opened question not answered yet.... to make a restore image... however i had a workaround I took the hard disk and put it into another g4 and ran the install cds ok. Then relocated it back to the machine. At that screen i just waited and pressed C a couple of times and bam up it came...
Just in case i left the install cd 1 in disc drive so i could boot up to it and then re-select the start up disk ,,, hope it helps regards

The firmware says nothing about with OS X:

This firmware update replaces Power Mac G4 Firmware Update 4.1.9, and includes a fix for the absence of audio when version 4.1.9 was installed on certain Power Mac G4 desktop machines running Mac OS 9.1. If you previously installed Power Mac G4 Firmware Update 4.1.9 and did not experience this problem, Power Mac G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8 is not needed.

It's unlikely that the firmware will solve your problems (But still possible). You might want to try other things before you order OS 9.

im aware that the firmware may not do anything.. i just got it for 20 bux off ebay.. i figure it may come in handy in the future anyway.. the person i bought it from will refund my money, so once i try this at least i can get my money back and hopefully source a good used one..

although now that the windows xp on an intel mac competition has been finished and that norf guy sucessfully booted it up, i might just get a new intel mac

Be aware that you'll be on your own if you run Windows on the Intel Mac. It's not officially supported by either Microsoft or Apple.

Besides, if you want to run Windows just get a Windows computer. You'll get the full support on the hardware and software instead of a hacked installation of Windows. If you're going to spend the money for the Intel Mac, make sure it's going to be running OS X otherwise you're wasting your money.
