G4 reinstall questions

I have a G4 that came with Jaguar and has been updated to Panther. I had some problems and Apple suggested I do a reinstall with archive. Can I do this by just using Panther or do I have to reinstall Jaguar first and then once again upgrade to Panther. If so, do I upgrade just like I did orignially with Panther or is there a different way you are supposed to do it?

That depends if you have an upgrade disk for panther, or an install disc.

How can I tell what I have? I think I have a disk that you use to upgrade Jaguar to Panther.

In the installer, after the license agreement which you didn't read, there will be a screen to choose options like your install destination. Click the button that says "Options" or "Customize" or whatever it is, and see if it lets you choose Archive and Install. This moves your old system to a folder called Previous System and installs Panther fresh.
