i still run a g5 with tiger at my studio which up till 2 days ago was stable,
but now when i open a folder that i need to stay on view it closes and defaults back to finder on pulldown bar

Have you upgraded to QuickTime 7.6 anytime recently? There have been some issues with it and a version of Stuffit.
