I just bought a used G5 (June 2004, dual 2.0 Ghz, PCI-X slots, 8x AGP slot).
Using three different graphics apps, I get an intermittent series of colored hash marks all over the screen. Switching the screen resolution makes the hash go away but it returns every 15 minutes or so. I've pulled cleaned, and reseated the card. Also, every 15 minutes, the screen goes black, then reappears normally in about 2 seconds. Data entered while the screen is black is fine. I'm almost positive the card is bad.
I connected another good monitor I have to the card, and got the same results. Re-shipping the computer back seems ridiculous.
I'm looking for a replacement card (used is fine). The card currently in the G5 is the ATI Radeon 9600 XT.
I thought I'd swap my AGP card from my dead MDD G4 but the card doesn't fit .
I've read that my MDD (dual 1.25 Ghz) has an X4 slot, and ran at a different voltage. Besides, it doesn't fit the slot in the G5 (AGP X4 and X8 are different slots on the motherboard I assume).
A new exact replacement is incredibly expensive!!
Q: Can ANY 8x AGP graphics card fit my machine?
Does it have to be Mac specific?
My budget is around $50-$70.
Many ebayers have no idea if their cards fit my machine (PC people)
Generally, what card can I look for that's inexpensive and has 128MB or 256MB VRAM? Thanks
