Since we're getting a little off topic, I'll play along briefly.
I thought Apple underdelivered for a few years there. We all watched the speed gap gradually get out of control. I was very seriously (ok, somewhat seriously) considering switching to PC systems purely for speed. That was almost a year ago. Before Panther and the G5.
Since then, suddenly my G4s have new life. I was going to buy DP G5s last year, but I was so impressed with the performance of Panther on the DP G4s that I figured I'd stick it out another year and see if Stevo comes through on the 3 GHZ "promise".
I do pretty demanding work, day in and day out, like many of you. I am very demanding on my machines. I hate delays, rendering, slowdowns, (I spent sixteen hours yesterday debugging a delay caused by Portfolio's poorly implemented contextual menu plugin). That's how much I hate the slightest invasion in my workflow. Panther on the dual G4s is a very damn efficient workflow. I can't imagine what a loaded G5 will deliver. I'm hoping REVB Hypertransport makes it into the 3 GHZ beast. Whoah.
And the software lineup is phenomenal. DVDSP, FCP, SoundTrack, Logic, iLife, the list goes on. These are now my staple apps and are a joy to use and provide amazing efficiencies of integration. Bravo. Not to mention the little things that I use that make my life easier like shared calendars with iCal, my client data on my iPod, .Mac for synching it all easily, etc.
In short, while Apple was very close to losing me a year and half ago (after twenty years of cult-like loyalty), consider me now impressed. APPLE HAS DELIVERED!
