g5 goes crazy

I've encountered the following situations twice...

The computer becomes unresponsive and all the fans crank up to full speed. I can't pinpoint the problem. No new recent hardware or software changes.

Any ideas?

I wouldn't have a clue, but, it could help if you posted what OS, etc so other more helpful members *cough* Zammy, Fryke, ElDiablo, Bobw*cough* can help you faster.

Do you gain response after a while, or is it a case of restarting?

Did you check in the Activity Monitor what app is wasting the resources? Any usb or firewire devices that are plugged?

Convert, I was thinking twice if I should post a reply and disillusion everyone reading this thread. :)

Run Hardware Test from your OS CD/DVD

dual 2ghz g5, 2gb ram
os 10.3.6

When my mac becomes unresponsive, I mean nothing works. I can't even ssh into from another box... mouse, keyboard, monitor do not work.

I don't see anything "unusual" in the /var/log/system.log file. If you want, I can do a tail on the file so you can see last entries...

Prior to these events, I used to have my compute ron for weeks... Last time this happened was a few days ago. I tend to leave my computer on all the time.

any help is greatly appreciated.

so, you need to restart the system after it's frozen or is it just a temporal time of "silence"? Since you even tried ssh, it seems to not be a problem with your local usb input devices.
Does the time separator still flash? How does the system react on command+option+esc? Do you have your g5 plugged to a network?

Could be related to any USB devices you have connected. The Hardware Test found on the included CD/DVD is always a first step. Use it to boot up then run the test to see if anything shows up. Then consider disconnecting any USB devices and reconnecting them one by one to see if the problem shows up again.

I have to hold the power button down till the computer turns off. The monitor is black so I can't see anything...

There is no reaction to command+option+esc
