Hi Sorry to be a pain but can anyone tell me if all model Mac G5 are using the Logic Boards I.E 2.0 ghz 2.5 ghz 2.7 ghz, I know they changed the processors from IBM to Intel but did they change the boards aswell at the same time,??
Its just i have been given the dreaded news of the logicboard Falure:eek:

And the Company can not get a replacemant from any of thier Contacts, So i need to replace the mac with a nearly new one, & want to try and steer clear of the logic board if possible.

Also if i do get a replacement G5 will i be able to take the harddrives out of the old broken mac and put them into the replacement mac and will it boot up ok??

Sorry to sound like a noob but with Mac im at a total loss.

Many Thanks in advance.

If its the bad caps issue and you don't mind risking the board you might want to try to get someone to recap it. I'm looking into getting into recapping since our company has several of these boards lying around and the new caps can be bought for very cheap. But to answer your question not all of those boards are the same. There are 1.6Ghz, 1.8Ghz, 2.0Ghz and then there are the 17" and 20" models. You might want to provide your serial # to get the right info on the board you need.

If the place that is looking at your machine can't get a replacement they are not Apple authorized or are not very familiar with Macs. I'd get a socond opinion from someone who knows, especially if this is a power mac G5 that they diagnosed because those things are not easy to diagnose even for experienced Apple techs.

Hi Enforcer

Each model and revision of iMac usually has a different logic board.
And the logic boards are different between the iMac G5 and later iMac Intel models - the processor is not the only changed thing there.

If you do or would find a working replacement for that exact model of iMac's logic board, you can replace that part, and all the rest should work.
If you can't get a replacement for that specific logic board, there is still nothing preventing you from getting all the rest of the iMac's stuff - such as hard drive contents.
Most likely target disk mode will work just fine when connecting this Mac to another, and you can access and/or copy all data elsewhere for now.

I don't think the OP has an iMac. Check out the clock speeds the OP mentioned. I almost read it as iMac G5 as well. :p

Thanks for the response guys, I Have a powermac G5 ( my fault for not informing you of the spec:eek:

POWER MAC G5 2.0 Dual Processor
2 x 160 GB hd
3Gb Ram ( 6x512mb pairs) pc 3200 400mhz dimms

Serial CK351013QE8
OSX 10.5

If i was to get a reconditioned POWER MAC 2.5 Dual will it still be the Logic Board & will it have the IBM Processor or the Intel, Also are the intel Power Macs Better than the IBM ones ??
And will going up in processor size as such make a difference to putting the old Macs Harddrive in it??

Sorry for being a pain guys but im really stuck here.

Best Regards.

If you get a reconditioned Power Mac of any kind its going to be an IBM processor and chipset. If you are looking at a reconditioned Power Mac that is fairly cheap, then go for it. But if you are going to spend a substantial amount of money, you might as well invest your money wisely and get a newer intel machine. The new iMacs are relatively inexpensive compared to the Mac Pros and will more than likely do everything you need and then some. If you are worried about whats on the old drive, the migration engine built into OSX does a very good job of moving everything onto a new machine.
