I have a G5 1.8 dual running 10.3.4. It's unable to see my appletalk zone.
There are 5 other identical G5s, all can see the appletalk zone ok.

Appletalk is enabled.

Any ideas?

btw, you can use appletalk just on one connection. Supposed you have an airport card plugged, you will have to choose, which connection should use appletalk (ethernet or airport). Some ppl have apple talk just enabled for the connection they are currently not using and wonder why they have such kind of probs. Maybe this happended to you too?

I've disabled everything but appletalk. Still no change.

Thanks for your help though.

I may just reinstall the OS.

Will let you know how it's goes.

Wow, you seem to rush a bit. You don't need to reinstall. I suppose your G5s are connected over ethernet. If so, did you make sure appletalk is activated for the ethernet connection and not accidently for the airport?
Did you also try ichat? Does ping between the two G5s work? If so, what about filesharing? You will need to turn on filesharing to see any files..
Good luck!

Yep, Appletalk is connected for ethernet. The G5 is an exact copy of 5 other G5s. I only have the problem with one of them. But I'll try the filesharing / iChat suggestion.

Thanks!

OK, I've tried pinging the fautly G5 but get no replys.

Tried pinging from the faulty G5 but it says "No Route To Host".

Changed the network cable for one that works, no change.

Tried a different network socket port in the wall, no change.

Really stumped now.

So, you don't have an appletalk but network problem. Do you have the G5s plugged to a router? If so, log into the webinterface of the router and see, if the log file shows any events on the faulty G5. Maybe your network card is damaged?! To test this you could plug the faulty G5 directly to your WAN and see, if you can access the internet with it. If this is not working as well, something must be wrong with your network card. One last test: plug two G5s to eachother using an ethernet cable. Do they find eachother?

Oh, just to let you know. The G5 can browse the internet fine and it picks up the DHCP settings fine also. The only thing it can't do is see my appletalk network.

Do you still think it's the network card?

The G5 is connected to a router so I'll check the webinterface like you suggested and try networking 2 G5 via an ethernet cable.

will let u know how it goes.

I thought ping didn't work between the G5s. Ping doesn't use appletalk for the package. So, it rather looks like some network problem within your lan. I think a closer look to your log file in the router webinterface will clear some things.
Good luck!

OOPS!! I just tried it again and ping does work to and from the G5.
Sorry about the mis-information.

Looks like it's an Appletalk problem.

Is there anything else I can try?

Did you try turning on filesharing and see, if you have any access?
One more thing to try: setup a new user account without any restriction in rights and see, if appletalk works finally. And what was the result of ichats rendezvous?

OK, tested filesharing and ichat, works fine.
Set up a new user account without any restrictions...Still not see the Appletalk zone. :(

hmmm, seems like appletalk works as well but something is wrong with your network browser. Did you try the Apple+K command to connect to the other macs?

Try this for troubleshooting - in the Terminal, type atlookup.

And have you tried turning on appletalk in the utility "Directory access?" (Applications>Utilities).

Success!! I typed in atlookup in terminal. This seemed to kick it back into life and it started seeing the appletalk zone! :D

Thanks guys for all your help!
