G5 PowerBooks by year's end?

Apple might only offer the PB G5 at 17" due to heat issues etc, or as a sheer marketing aspects. Lets be honest, can you really see a 12" G5 PowerBook? Maybe in 2007...

I don't know if it would take that long. There are already 15" derivatives of the 64-bit AMD chip in Notebooks. This leads me to believe that it would be not as difficult. However, Apple may have to add a bit more in the thickness to accommodate the G5 processor in a laptop.

But something will be needed to ID the G5 PBs from the G4s (other than the :D on the users' face), and I seriously doubt Apple will go with the mini-iPod colored metal look.

hmm, maybe a holed up version of a powerbook G5? just like it's big brother, the G5 powermac? :D

Just a point that no-one seems to have mentioned in the discussion re potential colour of G5 PBs...

Black retains heat...

;-)

I think this depands a lot on the type of colour. I have seen finishs for heaters being black as well...

Things that generate heat - such as radiators - are generally not suited to black paint finishes...

because black retains heat!

Lighter colours reflect heat...

On a machine such as our hoped-for G5 PB - where one of the main issues is cooling, retaining heat would not be a good idea!

Black objects absorb heat while white ones reflect it. I think retention has less to do with the color than the material used to make the object up in the first place (key word: LESS).

As for what PB G5's look like, who knows... Apple didn't change the look of the Xserve much (only really for technical reasons, like to be able to install windtunnels), but then Xserves are meant to be stuck in a closet and all but forgotten about. And I doubt many consumers would go for a Powerbook with 2 huge holes in it, or a grill... there is waaay too much potential for contamination.
