G5 tower volume problems - fades in and out.

Hi - I've got a G5 dual 2 ghz powerpc tower, and I've had intermittent problems with my speaker volume fading in and out while i'm playing music through itunes. The volume level changes on a very slow fade from normal volume to silent, over the course of a minute or two, then back to normal levels. It happens with the internal speaker as well as either speaker jack (front or back) played to headphones or speakers.

This happened for awhile a few years ago when the machine was newer, then went away for awhile (software updates?), and now it's back.

Actually, system sounds also are gone during the silent part of the fade, so the problem doesn't seem confined to itunes.

What OS are you running? Is it fully up-to-date (Apple Menu > Software Update) ???

Have you applied any Firmware updates that Apple issued for your machine (Apple Menu > Software Update)?

Have you tried a clean installation of Mac OS X? Have you tried creating a fresh "test" user account, logging in as the "test" user to see if the problem exists across user accounts?
