Gates has the wrong idea ...

What do you think of Bill Gates spam idea? I feel he has lost his mind and he should never be in any kind of political office. this idea will do nothing of spam coming from other countries where the law could not touch.

How about the idea of mandatory legitimate email headers? A penalty would be accrued to the store/business that the spammers advertise. Fake headers brings a penalty onto the benefactor of the spam.

What's your idea?

I don't get spam. I am really careful who I give my address to. I learned the hard way and had to get a new address. One year with a .mac mail account and not one spam.

I do not think there should be any regulations on email. You can mail a regular letter without a return address. Why can't you send an anonymous email? I get more junk in my physical mailbox than I do online. I dont like it but the post office is kind enough to provide large garbage cans right next to the mailboxes. The waste created by mass mailings bothers me mostly from an environmental point of view.

Now maybe ISPs trying to cut down network traffic generated by spam could require valid headers. If you want to send to their customers you address must be verified. There is incentive here for the ISP because of all the extra bandwidth they are paying for because of spam.

I don't think we should have to pay to send emails. I would much rather have to sift through loads of spam than pay even a few cents to send emails.

Im so uninspired by his theorey....... I mean come on the hackers can get his windows Code and hack Microsoft's Website what in the world makes him think that will work on any thing.... and hell if im gunna pay to send every email i send out i own a business and 40% of it is done in Email.... I think the man is grabbing at straws to see if he could look better than he is now... Oh well guess u can say he is trying

I'm sure spammers will find a way around the cost that would be assoicated with sending emails.

That's right, JohnnyV. They'd just move offshore, so that the end users and legitimate businesses get stuck with the mess.

its talked here as well: http://www.repubblica.it/2004/c/sezioni/scienza_e_tecnologia/mailbill/mailbill/mailbill.html

not time to translate in full here, http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr (italian > english) gives you enough comprensible fast option.

My interpretations:

1) I get anyway no spam to .mac account. (which is a pay option..)

2) I would never pay for a M$ service to guarantee me no spam. Their spam filters are really terrible.

3) M$ could do do something if they wanted. They don't want to. The same as ISPs. The ones who don't want spam don't allow thousands of emails be sent from one address daily, those who do .. they get money for sending spam.

4) Just one more way that M$ tries to make money. I can feel there are a ton of .. AOL users or well, not very savvy users out there who would believe in M$ promises and pay for their email - without considering alternatives. Just like they have m$ passport just because they think it is necessary to have it.

Configure all future SMTP servers to send a maximum of 3 or so e-mails every five seconds. There you go.

Of course, spammers would get around that too...
