Generic Icons

On my iMac running 10.5.4 all file icons get changed from their normal program icons to generic icons. For example a Word document looses its Word icon and gets a generic document icon. How can I get the regular program document icons to display instead of the generic document icons?

Apparently in the continuous Apple upgrades, a preference was changed. Click on the desktop, type Command-J, un-check the "Show icon preview" box, and all is well again. Thanks Apple. You might check your other folders as well; same procedure applies.
