Getting Airport to network with PC

Hi

I apologize if this has already been asked before. I'm a complete idiot with computers and the only reason I'm here is because my elderly mother just bought a mac and wants me to set it up with my father's PC.

Here is the situation. My mother's house has an older PC and a new Imac, as well as an airport station. The PC doesn't have wireless features, so I bought a D-link USB wireless adapter.

The mac gets internet flawlessly through Airport, but I can't get the PC to recognize the network. It just says "no networks found". In the "laymanest" terms possible, what should I do so that both computers can get internet from Airport?

Thank you

This seems simple. What you have to do is read the D-Link manual and it will tell you how to use your Web browser to Administer that wireless router. If you never got into that D-Link wireless router then it will be simple. Just follow these steps:

1. If the Mac is on the wireless then open System Preferences (in your Dock)->Network.

2. In Network (in the left hand column) highlight the word Airport.

3. In the right hand column click on the button with the word "Advanced".

4. A drop-down will come down so then click on the "TCP/IP" tab.

5. In the "TCP/IP" tab note take the IP address of the 'Router'.

6. Close the System Preferences now.

7. Open your favorite internet browser and put in that 'Router' IP address (it most likely should be 192.168.0.1) and a drop-down (in the browser) will ask you for "UserName & Password"

8. In the UserName put the name: admin Then in the Password section leave it blank then press the O.K. button.

This will get you into the wireless router. There you go through the buttons to find what wireless band of the router is broadcasting. This way you can list it and then in the PC (that can't get on the wireless) look into is Control panel's Wireless section to see what the wireless capability of the wireless dongle attached to it. Then please post the result so we can help you match the PC dongles wireless to the router's wireless frequency.

You can tell you grandmother doing this is like trying to tune a radio to a certain radio station.

Thanks for the thanks and I am happy it worked for you.

For future reference tell your significant other reading the manual can actually help you use a device to it's full capability.

Now for wireless and the different frequencies try reading the Wikipedia article on computer wireless called IEEE 802.11. Then when you get wireless access points and different wireless devices trying to access that access point you can match up the frequencies with ease.
