Getting decent Quake 4 performance w/ G5 dual 2.3

I'm running a stock G5 dual-core 2.3 mHz with 2 GB of RAM and I just got Quake 4. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to play it at any kind of reasonable display quality. At anything above Medium quality, low resolution it gets really jerky. The video card is, I believe, a GeForce 6600 with 256 MB of RAM.

Will a video card upgrade solve my problems? The only card I've found out there for this machine is the Radeon X1900, which at $300-400 is a bit steep to just get better Quake performance. Of course it'll probably upgrade other games' performance too, right? What else will see improvements from an upgrade? I currently run 23" and 24" HP screens with no perceptible video issues (though I'm not watching a lot of video on them - mostly coding and design).

If not the video card, is this machine just not up to the task? I thought it was reasonably new. Maybe I just need to ebay Quake and stick to something else...
