Getting rid of illegal characters, easily?

Im setting up files on a Mac to be transfered onto a Windows server. Whenever i've tried this in the past, it halts when it gets to something with an illegal character, and i've had to manual fix the file names.

Is there an easier way to get rid of all the illegal characters all in one shot, like MacNames which is only for use on a Windows machine.

i don't really know alot about scripts and all that, but if explained in detail, i think i could handle it.

Thanx in advance!

Which Windows Server do you use? 2008, 2003, 2000...?
Do you get these errors when the file names are simply too long or when they contain characters such as äåñéø¥ or some other character set?

One way would be to use AppleScripts to shorten and latinize the filenames...

There's mac freeware called File List, which lets you re-name files en masse. It also supports substituting one or more characters for others. Though it could be tedious, if you know what illegal characters your file names use, you could search and replace them en masse -- one pass over your HD or your documents directory for each illegal character.

Then there's also this freeware, which I haven't tried:
