I have been attempting to get a GNOME desktop setup on my OS X PB system. I am using XFree86 4.0.2 and Xvnc installed (and using a Aqua VNC client to view X apps).
The big problem I am having is compiling the gnome-libs. Gnome has a heavy dependency on shared libraries in the various components, and OS X does shared libraries a bit differently than most other Unix/Linux sytle systems.
Anyone able to get gnome-libs to compile with shared lib support?
I have been able to hack together a gnome desktop that (sort of) runs on my OS X system by remotely running Gnome and also KDE programs on my NetBSD 68k Mac. If anyone wants to see a screen shot of GNOME on OS X (thru an old 68k Mac running NetBSD) check out http://balder.prohosting.com/halim/gnome-kde.jpg
Unix porting on OS X still has a long way to go before we will be able to just configure;make;make install to port things...
