Going from Jaguar to Panther

I'm currently running 10.2.8 on a Powermac G4 with two hard drives (a 60 Gig and a 120 Gig). The 60 gig drive is my boot drive, but my iTunes and iPhoto libraries are on the 120 Gig drive. There's an alias to my Pictures folder in my Home directory, and the library files in the Music folder in my home directory point to the Music folder on the 120 Gig drive. It all works very well.

Now, when Panther arrives on the 24th, I plan on doing a clean install as opposed to an upgrade. Aside from the obvious (backing up my Home directory to several places prior to the install) what do I need to do after Panther is installed permissions-wise to my backed-up Home directory, and to the 120 Gig drive with all of my music and pictures on it? Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Marc

There are three ways to get 10.3 on your system: upgrade (not recommended), clean install and the archive & install. The clean install would be the harder of the latter two as you are going to have to fix more things. The archive & install removes all parts of 10.2.x and replaces them with 10.3 but leaves things like your home directory and applications folder (the non-Apple included apps) untouched for the most part. It also should save most of your settings. You'll also have the option of retrieving any elements from the old system that you may have wanted as all replaced items end up in the previous system folder on the root level of your drive.

Restoring your home items to a clean install may require play with the permissions of the older elements. I would suggest batchmod for fixing them as the problems arise. Having done something like this when replacing a hard drive for a client, I can tell you it isn't the most fun thing to do (at least not for me).

Thank you. Maybe I'll try the Archive and Install using Jaguar just to get an idea of what I'm in for (after backing up with CCC, that is!) Thanks again.

Marc

Actually, it's not so much that. Whenever you upgrade, anything that the system doesn't really use anymore gets left on your drive. I've upgraded since 10.0.x, and I have a nice load of files and "stuff" that just isn't used anymore. I'm most likely going to go for a clean install with Panther. ;)

HA. I'm not doing a clean install again! I did a clean Jag install after th esystem update rooted it COMPLETELY!

I'll just archive-install for it!
