guest access problem

I have a quicksilver G4 running 10.3.2 and I've got a problem with the guest access. When another computer tries to connect to my computer on the network (via AFP), and chooses to connect as a guest, no volumes are available to choose. Ages ago (I don't remember when) the user would be able to select my username to connect to, and then be able to access my public space. I've tried fixing the permissions with disk utility and that hasn't helped. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanx.

btw, when I login with my username and password it works fine and I can access all the volumes, as well as my home folder as a volume.

I am not sure, I'll take a chance. Guest access is very restrictive. And I believe it is limited to just the public folder. You set the afp user to access what you would like. For example, I have a hard-drive on my G4 that I store music on. From my iBook, I gave permission to access/read/write that drive, by using info->Ownership & Permission. File Sharing has to be on in system preferences.

well that's the thing. I think the public folder is broken, cause it doesn't show up when you try to connect to my computer. I've tried setting the permissions in get info, but that doesn't seem to help, either. Currently they are set at:

you can: read & write
owner access: read & write
group staff access: read only
others: read only

If you have checked to make sure file sharing is on, check the firewall. You also need to allow that port open.

There is a firewall on my server, but it's obviously open since I can connect to my server, however it can't connect to me. I have no firewall on my computer. File sharing is also on on both computers.

As I said earlier, I can connect to my computer fine if I log in with my name and password. I just cannot connect if I login as a guest.

OS X has its own firewall. Go to System Preferences>Sharing and click on the Firewall tab.

In file sharing do you have guest as an allowed user? Put a document in your public folder, then try logging in as guest. That is the only place a guest can go on your computer.

What do you mean by do I have guest as an allowed user? I can't find that as an option in the network or sharing preference panes..

But okay, this is the setup: I have a beige G3 running Jaguar which acts as an internet sharing computer and a space to backup files to. I also have a quicksilver G4 which is my personal computer. The G3 has the default Jaguar firewall enabled. This is not the problem. File sharing is on on both computers.

When I connect from the quicksilver to the server (beige G3), everything works fine. No problems. When I connect from the server to the quicksilver, one of two things happens: If I use my username and password, everything works normally; but when I try to log in as a guest, I am presented with no volumes to mount. It connects normally and brings up the window asking you which volumes you want to mount but the list is empty. (This list usually has the name of each user on the system, and when the named volume is monunted the public space of that user is presented.)

Basically my public folder doesn't come up. I've checked the permissions with get info (as I said earlier in the thread) and that hasn't solved it. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Okay, I found the problem. After messing around whith a whole lot of things, I went into netinfomanager and under 'users' I found that there was a field 'sharedDir', which was blank. After typing in 'Public' to this field and restarting file sharing, the problem was solved :)
