GUI for Locate command

I am new to programming objective C and am very interested in writing a GUI for the locate command.

Locate is so much faster I think than Sherlock and I think it would be a good project to get started with.

Does anyone know any good example code for calling system binaries and returning the results.

A tutorial would be the best.

Just so you know, there's a program called Locator (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=12404&db=mac) already available that does this, but writing a new one would still be an excellent way to grow accustomed to Cocoa/Objective-C.
