my hard drive in my powermac g4 933 Mhz is making a squeek-ka-put noise .... it doesn't sound good. I've run Disk utility and TechTool and those programs said it was okay. i've problems trying to copy files and folders backing up. sounds like it's gonna die ...

Yep.

You can check the "S.M.A.R.T." status of the drive (kind of a hardware integrity check that most modern ATA drives have) by opening Disk Utility, clicking on the device (not the partition) and looking at the information at the bottom. If the S.M.A.R.T. status says anything other than "Verified," you most likely have major problems.

Open the machine while running and make sure it's the hard drive and not a fan. If it's the drive, replace it.

yea, i figured it was at the end of its life. It sounded horrible. I went to microcenter and bought an 80 GB Maxtor with 8 mb cache for $108 with tax. Not the greatest deal, but this computer needed to be up and running asap. It took about 2 hours to back up, and 2 hours to replace, reinstall OS X, applications and data.

I'm kinda disappointed that this hard drive failed so soon. It's about 2 yrs old only. My 1st powermac g4 had a hard drive failure too that required replacement. The one that failed on my 1st powermac was Seagate. This current one is an IBM.

I'm glad that it's so much easier to service a Mac than the previous pc's i've had. Also, getting OS X reinstalled took less than 1 hr. The only problems I've been having are permission related things and stability issues with applications like Illustrator which may be font related. I have about 150 fonts installed. Some fonts are old windows true type fonts ... I don't know which font(s) could be bad. Is there a systematic or easier way of finding out? like a font checker application?
