Hard drive not mounting: "Unknown Device

I had 2 External LaCie D2 Extreme hard drives mirrored for saving photos. Neither mounts now and get a "Unknown Device" in the About This Mac window. I've tried 400, 800 firewire and USB cables, have unplugged and re-plugged in a variety of ways, both together and separately, with no luck.

Neither drive show up in the Finder or in Disk Utility. I tried the StellarPhoenix recovery app but it doesn't see the drive either.

I tried each of the drives on my MacBook but no luck there. I'm running a G5 on 10.5.6 and have several other drives online without problems.

I got an estimate from DriveSavers but at $1000-$3000, that is prohibitive a route.

Any suggestions?

Did you try the disk on another machine to see if it is the disk or the computer? Plus to reset the ports on a Mac is done by Reseting Your PRAM.
