Hard Drive problem - can't boot up!

I've got a Dual G4 Tower. Running 10.3.9. When trying to boot up it drops me into the GNU with a "not a directory" error. I've run Disk Tools - First Aid and it doesn't find any problems. I probably do need to reformat, but would like to recover some data before I do. Any ideas? Thanks!
 
I am assuming that you can start up with the OS CD to run Disk Utility to repair the drive.

Try Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro, booting with the CD and have it do all the tests.
