Is there a software to take a snapshot of the hard drive similar to ghost? or does Ghost work on Macs?

Second, (this might be a question for AOL), is the address book for AOL for Mac vers. 10.3.7 stored on the hard drive or on AOL servers? Do you know how to make a back up copy?

As you can see by my questions i am getting ready to re-load the OS on a mac book or do an upgrade, more likely a re-load. I know very little about Macs. I am doing this for an 80+ yr. old General in the US armed forces who served our country for many years and loves his Mac :)
 
It appears to me that your aol contacts (address book) are in both places. I say this because if I sign in to aol as a guest on another computer, I can access my contacts list. You can download & install aol communicator to extract your address book. It also has a feature that helps you remove duplicates.
