Hardrive & passwords

Hi,

I've just bought a Lacie external Hardrive. I have set it and and am now trying to backup my user file. When I do this it begins to save and then tells me I 'may' need to type in an administrator password, would I like to stop or continue. Pressing continue makes it stop saving and pressing stop does the same thing. Am I doing this correctly?

Also by backing up the user file am I backing up Entourage?

Looking for ward to some help.

If you are backing up the "Users" folder in your Startup disk, then you will save info for all users of the machine. This will include Apps installed only for single users, the Documents folder which is the default save folder for many apps, as well as the system Library and other folders as well inncluding ones you have installed there. Entourage should save in Documents as its default, but the appication likely installed (as default) in your Applications folder so it won't be saved.

Try repairing permissions on your startup disk (with Disk Utility). If you are logging in as the Admin account, or you're the only account on the computer, you should not have to authenitcate to copy your own files directly to another drive. If you are using a back-up utility then the process may be different - their tech support would be the place to go.

Since the introduction of OS X, it is NO LONGER
possible to simply copy folders from one locat-
ion to another by dragging them. Most folders
you can still copy, but the important ones like
the Library will always generate an error mes-
sage.

You will have to use a software like Carbon
CopyCloner (freeware) or SuperDuper (share-
ware) - both can be found via versiontracker.

I have never ever had a problem with Copy-
Cloner, and have mainly read favourable re-
views - but I have heard of one user having
lost his data using it; I feel this is weird, and
do not know the details - but just so you
know... Another free utility to back up data
is SilverKeeper from LaCie.
